SBF goes to DC Startup Week
Founder and Executive Director, Sophie Capshaw-Mack was selected to be a speaker at DC Startup Week, where she will present "Starting a Nonprofit in College: Turning Adversity Into Opportunity". The presentation will take place on Monday, September 24 from 10:00am-11:00am at John Hopkins School on 1740 Mass. Ave. NW. DC Startup Week features thought-provoking, informative, and entertaining events put on by more than 50 collaborating organizations focused on entrepreneurship and is sponsored by Google Chrome.
Sophie's session addresses the logistics, obstacles, and opportunities that arise when starting a nonprofit in college. She will draw upon her personal story to both illuminate these key points and provide a more tangible model of success. As an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she founded a nonprofit called Survivor's Best Friend (SBF) that unites shelter animals with survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence one adoption at a time. In this presentation, she will share how adversity can be transformed into something magical, looking at the formation of SBF as an exemplary case. She will also highlight the logistical tools necessary for beginning a nonprofit. The goal of this speech is to inspire young people to bounce back from adversity and pursue their entrepreneurial ventures no matter how far out of reach they may at first seem.
